Are you happy?

Top educational institutions and schools have something to say to the parents every parents teachers interface. The head of the school will say somewhere in his speech, “Our motto is to make our students good human beings.” All the parents will nod in approval. The guests on the dais including the school management and guest speaker who is most likely a psychiatrist will smile at the speaker as if to say, “yes.”

But! I know I can’t start a sentence with but, but have we as parents asked ourselves that question? Do we really want our children to be good human beings? They might be very good; obedient, straight-A performers, helpful to all, doing good to all. Is that what we should be really telling our children? Or maybe we should leave the traditional approach behind and tell them to be happy? At the end of their schooling, they might be really good human beings but will they all be happy?

Being happy is something that doesn’t come easy in this century. We have to teach our children and before that we have to teach ourselves to be happy, if we haven’t already done so. Not all children can be straight-A performers, not all students can be the first in their class, not all children can be the same. Does it mean that the child who stands the last in the class doesn’t have the right to be happy? So shouldn’t we be telling them to be happy with what they have got? I agree that we have to strive to be better but in that process if we are forgetting to be happy with what we have in our hands, aren’t we chasing something that we don’t have?

I believe that when a person is happy from within, that person will automatically be a good human. Happiness is the new mantra. If we start early we can continue to be in that state.

Happiness is being happy.
